Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

The "Translator's Guild" is dedicated to the translation and publication of the works by Aleister Crowley in various languages. This Guild is a division of Ordo Templi Orientis and a not-for-profit corporation.

The Guild is compiling a growing selection of Crowley's original and translated writings either in the Archives of this Site or giving links to other locations. We do welcome new members, and if you are interested to join, please read carefully about the membership requirements below and download the required files and forms.

Love is the law, love under will.

      Intents & Purpose

- Excerpt from Liber CXCIV,
"O.T.O. An Intimation with Reference to the Constitution of the Order"

Many of the writings by Aleister Crowley become available as foreign language editions. Such publication projects are of great importance in the process of promulgating the Law of Thelema, and contributions in this respect are highly appreciated. The general intent of the Translator's Guild is to provide logistical help and support for translators with respect to needed or helpful background material, desktop publishing software, typesetting and fonts, as well as the book production itself, and furthermore to foster mutual exchange of experience and build up contacts to translators in other countries or nations.

To cover any legal aspects and questions of proper copyright authorization translators and publishers are reqested to contact the O.T.O. International Headquarters, Office of Rights and Permissions, the address of which you can find below or in the "Magical Link" (see 'Publications Director, Rights & Permissions'). Copies of the rules given out by the
Office of Rights and Permissions can be obtained on request from the Publications Director or from the Guild.

Translations and publications of all works by Aleister Crowley need to be authorized by the copyright holder Ordo Templi Orientis prior to publication. The Guild itself will not provide publication contracts or any other form of consent to publish, nor handle any other legal aspects related thereto.

Translation contracts are negotiated by O.T.O., and translators are advised to notify the Translator's Guild of their intent on translations before commencing work. This is to avoid possible duplication of effort. O.T.O. makes best efforts to ensure translators are paid by the publishers.

      Services

In order to facilitate the work of book production, the Guild will set up a database with the software templates (FrameMaker, MIF-format) and typeset data files of those works which have been newly published in the original by S. Weiser, NY or 93 Publishing. Data files for earlier publications are not always extant in final, formatted form, but most of Crowley's writings exist in FrameMaker format.

(A. Crowley, by A. John)The use of such templates may alleviate the pain of, e.g., creating anew the Qabalistic tables as used in Liber 777, Book 4 and other works as you can translate right into templates. Likewise, existing indices and references can easily be included. The most professional and most commonly used software in book production is the multi-platform program FrameMaker running on Mac, DOS and Unix machines which, amongst other advantages over semi-professional software, also allows for setting up an unlimited number of master page layouts and especially extensive and complicated cross-referencing. The use of this program is highly encouraged, but of course not mandatory. Data files in this format can be exchanged with storage either on 3 1/2" floppy disks, CDR's or Zip/Jaz drives, depending of the amount of data to be exchanged.

In order to supersede the many unauthorised and often faulty and defective pirate productions, the O.T.O. wants to produce new translations of high quality standards wherever this is possible. This intention not only applies to linguistic and stylistic aspects of the translations proper but also to the layout and the manufacturing of the books themselves. Of course we are aware that we have to take into account that the latter aspect may pose serious financial problems or even be impossible in some countries.

We also encourage you to inquire which of the works by Aleister Crowley are available in their original manuscript form from the O.T.O. International HQ Archives. The O.T.O. tries to purchase missing original manuscripts as the financial situation allows for it, or have them at least photocopied. The publications from the 1970's are especially faulty, as they had been censored or revised by their earlier editors. Sometimes the reason for this was ignorance, at other times the editors had moral or religious reservations and did not dare to print the words of the Beast as they were originally delivered. You may learn about one outstanding example of this by studying the Editor's Introduction to Book 4. In other cases, Crowley had revised his own manuscripts several times during his life-time, and some publications are based on rather early versions. As you can read in the Magical Link, there are several book projects ongoing in order to revise and replace these early editions. In general, it is our intention to restore the texts to their original condition wherever this is possible and also to publish those manuscripts which Crowley himself considered to be final versions. Wherever possible, O.T.O. prefers to produce translations from its newly-edited English editions.

Finally we maintain a steadily growing archive of hard copy and data copies of translations. All translators are requested to send in a copy of their work for this purpose.
